Winter and Rhinoplasty

It is the heart of winter right now and many people wonder about how this can affect surgery. Its summer and spring a better time than fall and winter? How does the cold affect the nose post-rhinoplasty? I'm sure many of you had these questions, but they were such mundane questions so you probably didn't think much of it at the same time. The key to rhinoplasty in the winter is actually not the cold, but rather the dryness. As you all know the nose is used as a filter for your body. However, in the winter people tend to stay indoors with the heat on. This causes extreme levels of dryness that are comparable to the Sahara Desert in Africa. Therefore, it is not the winter cold that is harmful, but the everyday habits of most people in the winter that affect the results of surgery. Today I would like to help all of you make sure that you stay warm, but inform you of how to set the atmosphere for post-surgery rhinoplasty.

Humidifier.

A Humidifier is a must in the winter. Heat rises in the room and causes the room to be stuffy because the hot air never leaves the room. As a result heat from the heater only dries out the room without replenishing the room with new liquids in the air. Not only is this bad for your skin, but it is detrimental to your nose. Your nose will get dried up and crusty. When your nose is healing from operation, you should be able to make sure that the inside of your nose is moist for optimal conditions. That is why we highly recommend having a humidifier in your house in order to make sure the air is not so dry.

Drink A LOT of Fluids

We cannot stress  this enough. Your nose thrives off of the abundance of bodily fluids. However, while people drink a lot in the summer because they are hot, many of us tend to drink less in the winter. You can fill up on humidifiers and different types of lotions, but many people don't realize that the main reason why they have dry skin discomfort in their nose is because they don't hydrate their body well enough. It is actually imperative that one drinks a lot of water during the winter because of the dryness of the environment. Don't forget it!

Saline Spray or Gel and Salt Water

Post surgery, it takes time for the mucus production to return to normal levels. The functionality of the nose is hindered because of the surgery performed on it. Therefore the use of saline spray or gel will help keep the nose moist and maintain levels that are ideal for the nose to recover from surgery. This is not only for the winter time, but for the summertime as well.

Weird Smell After Rhinoplasty?

Whether it be for functional, or purely aesthetic reasons, abnormal smell weeks after rhinoplasty is a common remark we often hear from patients.

Accumulation of mucus in the nose due to the reduced mobility of the mucus blanket within the nose as well as build up of crusting can cause unusual odors from within the nose. Old blood, crusts, extraneous mucus and such that build up and eventually dry up in a concentrated area

In these instances, clearing the crust will make the problem go away.  Saline nasal spray will slowly wash away the crust without the trauma of nose blowing.  Saline nasal spray instructions post-op will have been explained to you prior to your departure from Korea if the doctor found it necessary for your case. It is also very common for hard, solidified build up to either fall from out your nose, or down your throat. These chunks can be alarming, but are generally harmless.

Strange smell is not uncommon, so you don't need to worry to much if this becomes  apparant after surgery. Let your physician know. If you are not having increasing pain, redness, swelling, fevers or drainage, its unlikely to be infection. Remember, always avoid picking or sticking anything up your nose to clean or scratch at this time! And never do anything without consulting with your physician first!

Happy Recovery!

Best Clinical Post-op Care Across the Country at GNG Hospital

Why is Post-op Care Just as Important as the Surgery?

One of the most important things that a patient should understand before undergoing the knife, is that the surgery, itself, is only half of it. Post operative care and proper rehabilitation is just as important as the surgery and should not be taken lightly. It is imperative after surgery that you follow your doctor’s instructions to avoid any complications and to ensure a smooth, quick recovery.

Not only does GNG Hospital focus on the surgery itself, but on the importance of systematic post-operative care. From therapeutical hyperbaric oxygen treatment to high-frequency infrared de-swelling laser care, the quickest, smoothest recovery can be ensured. With 31 private hospital rooms ready in our ward under the finest clinical care by the leading medical team, patients can stay up to 1-3 nights to ensure a thorough, safe, and full recovery during their stay. 🏥

LED light treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy will begin from immediately after surgery and will be done during each post-op visit to ensure a quick, smooth recovery. Each patient will also be given two 30-minute complimentary nutritional supplement IV drips during the first night.

What kind of medication is included in your post-op care package? 🏥💊

Each patient will be individually prescribed medications inclusive of the following (please note that medication will vary based on the patient’s health record, medical condition, etc.): Amoxicillin (antibiotics), Menisolon (swelling steroids), Transamin Cap (hemostatics - keep bleeding within a damaged blood vessel), Taurolidine (antihistamine), Dibrufen (anti inflammatory), Mosapride Citrate (gastrointestional agent).

Prior to each surgery, our patients will undergo a series of medical examinations to ensure the safest surgery possible. Medication will be prescribed and given directly to the patient from our hospital.

Nasal Cleaning After Rhinoplasty !

 Nasal Cleansing After Rhinoplasty

[Purpose]
It takes 3~4 weeks for mucous to be regenerated. Until then, nasal mucous membrane is swollen which creates excessive bleeding and mucous in the first few weeks which can cause nasal congestion and hinder regeneration of mucous. After care is just as important as surgery, itself. When patients clean the nasal passage after surgery by themselves, it is helpful for mucous to be regenerated quickly.

[Preparation supplies] 50cc syringe, saline solution 0.9% (you can buy it in any pharmacy for the purpose of nasal cleansing), scar cream (you can start applying this cream from the 3rd week post-op/you can purchase this from any pharmacy)
**The ointment our hospital provided is not scar cream.

[Method]
1.     Tilt your face downwards and insert the syringe in one side of nose.
2.     Open your mouth and make ‘Ah~’ sound and slowly inject saline solution into your nose.
3.     Saline solution and nasal discharge can come out with some blood when the scabs fall off. If blood comes out from the nose, you can gently put a bit of tissue in the nose to stop the bleeding.
4.     If the blood doesn’t stop, drink ice water for 30 mins after putting tissue in the nose. If it doesn’t work, contact us and come to our hospital or go to a nearby emergency room.
5.     Do this 3~4 times a day up to 1 month.

6.     Use 100cc of saline solution per side each time.

GNG Hospital Plastic Surgery Aftercare

One of the most important things that a patient should understand before undergoing the knife, is that the surgery, itself, is only half of it. Post operative care and proper rehabilitation is just as important as the surgery and should not be taken lightly. It is imperative after surgery that you follow your doctor’s instructions to avoid any complications and to ensure a smooth, quick recovery.

Not only does GNG focus on the surgery itself, but on the importance of systematic post-operative care. From therapeutically pressure-concentrated oxygen treatment to high-frequency infrared de-swelling laser care, the quickest, smoothest recovery can be ensured. With 31 private hospital rooms ready in our ward under the finest clinical care by the leading medical team, the patient can stay up to 1-3 nights to provide a thorough, safe, and full recovery during their stay.

Once the patient has finished his/her surgery, immediate post-op care will be proceeded until the day they are discharged. Upon discharge, the patient will be given a complimentary post-op care goody bag to take care of themselves when they are at home. [Review] Thai Patient Undergoes Rhinoplasty with Dr.Hong in GNG Hospital!

She came all the way to Korea from Thailand to get rhinoplasty in GNG Hospital :)

<Before surgery>
Her main concern was long and wide nose  compare to her over all face features
as well as little bit of hump which makes her look less feminine.

<1st day post-op>

She is resting and having pumpkin porridge(-> healthy and good for reducing swelling) in her private room at 8th floor ward.

For few days, patient needs to replace the gauze under the nose because some blood and mucous come out slowly.

After rhinoplasty, patient will have outer cast, internal cast, stitches which will be removed 7th days post-op and nose packing will be removed in 48 hours after the surgery depending on the patient's condition.

Highly concentrated oxygen treatment is a part of post-op cares in GNG Hospital.
It helps fast recovery!
You may feel some ear pressure like you are in a plane.
You will be here for 10~15 mins.

The maximum swelling and bruise occur on the 3rd day post-op.
After that it will get better day by day.

<7th day post-op>

She is seeing Dr.Hong for the last follow up before going back. Since she got osteotomy, doctor is letting her know how to do massage twice a day in front of the mirror.

< 2 weeks post-op >

Major swelling disappears in 2 weeks~1 month.
And patient can expect final result after 6 months.

So please be patient and try not to focus on the small details which may cause unnecessary stress.

< 3rd week post-op>

It is only been 3 weeks after rhinoplasty but she looks gorgeous!!
Can't wait for her more update :)

Real Story-From Blunt Nose To Defined Nose!

The left side of photo is before surgery and you can see my blunt nose~!
In the right side of photo, you can see my pretty nose line starting from nose bridge to tip.

Now let me begin my real story~

 Before surgery, I was a normal cute(?) girl.
Like, when I go on a blind date, people often say I look cute rather than beautiful.

<Before surgery>
Even some famous selfie editing apps couldn't make my blunt nose look prettier.
while it can easily make my face line smoother and skin ton brighter.
Since I was a middle school student, I had complex on my blunt nose.
So I decided to get rhinoplasty and did alot of online research and end up choosing GNG Hospital~

<Right after the surgery>
This is me right after the surgery on the hospital ward bed ;)
The blue color cast is to protect and maintain the nose shape...and the gauze is to prevent runny nose and some blood from coming out.
I thought my swelling and bruise will be worse since I got functional surgeries(septoplasty,rhinitis surgery and nasal valve surgery)as well. But it was way better than I thought.
Still, it was very painful on the 1st day and there were packing inside both nostrils so it was not easy since I need to breathe only with my mouth.

<7 days post-op>
When you go to the hospital on the 7th day post-op, the blue color cast is removed.
And that is the picture when I was going to the school after removing the case and I wore light make up to cover up my bruise.
You can see your nose became beautiful and can see the shape even after 1 week even though there is small swelling and sometimes I can feel some sensation on my nose bridge but it doesn't bother me much.

<14 days post-op>
It's been 2 weeks~
When you go to a hospital after 14 days post-op, the nurse removes transparent plastic which called "silastic(?)" from the nostrils. After that, you will feel much better because air comes in more. Nose shape and nasal blockage have been improved at once~
That's the biggest reason why I chose GNG Hospital!

<1 month post-op>
After 1 month from the surgery, you wouldn't remember your original nose and you would just feel this new nose is your original nose haha.

<2 months post-op>
This is 2 months selfie! My nose look so natural and I love it!
Before surgery, I used to wear only casual clothes but since now I have nice nose bridge which makes me look good with formal clothes as well~

<3 months post-op>
I don't usually wear glasses for fassion...but here I am!
I have been told that I need to avoid wearing glasses for a month because it might press the nose bridge....

Time flies~ It's winter~
Finally I am in a relationship in 2015 Christmas!
If I didn't get rhinoplasty almost half years ago, I wouldn't have this chance.
So I definitely think I made a great choice!

Thank you Dr.Seong for making me pretty~
Consultant, nurses are so nice and I really appreciate it!
I will introduce GNG Hospital to many of my friends.
Thanks again!
