What to Expect after Rhinoplasty

Nose Surgery? No Problem!

You probably have a lot of questions about undergoing the knife, right? How bad will the bruising be? Will there be a lot of pain? How swollen will I be? Can I breathe?

The truth is, the overall process is a lot faster than you may expect. First of all, in most cases, the surgery time will be about an hour and a half to two hours - of course this varies. After waking up from surgery, you will feel a mixture of from just being completely out of it to feeling like you're in a dream. Coming off anesthesia is like waking up from a drunken dream, almost. After a good ten minutes or so, you may start going from dream-state to feeling a bit uneasy or in a daze. For the next 30-45 minutes, you will be in the recovery room trying to snap out of it. During this time, you may feel nauseous and disoriented. You will not be allowed to drink water for up to three hours to ensure that the anesthesia is out of your system enough. This is to ensure you don't vomit from nausea, which actually isn't so common -- but vomiting right after surgery can cause unnecessary exerted pressure to your face, which should, by all means, be avoided.

After that first hour in the recovery room, you will be free to go home, or at least back to your hotel, and rest for the rest of the day. We recommend taking it easy the first two days, but actually it is quite common for most people to resume their normal daily activity  (minus intense exercise, alcohol, and such) from the second day. Usually this is when our restless patients will go shopping or touring around Korea.

The patient is required to wear a nose cast for up to 7 days following the surgery date. The patient will, in the meantime, visit the hospital on the 3rd or 4th day post-op to undergo a thorough cleaning and inspection by our medical team. When the 7th day comes, both the stitches and cast will be removed.

As you can see to the left, our patient has just removed her cast! The bruising isn't so bad, after all, right?

What Happens After Facial Bone Contouring Surgery?

Can you guess what this is?

Square Jaw Reduction V Line Surgery is a procedure that adjusts the facial contour from the jaw all the way down to the tip of the chin for the most harmonical balance in golden ratio.

This patient underwent jaw reduction + chin advancement to soften her strong, masculine image. Patients are generally hospitalized for the the first 1-2 nights where they will receive all post-op medications inclusive of antibiotics + anti-inflammatory meds, painkillers, hemostatics, antihistamines, and gastrointestinal agents via IV. The patient should stay at least 7-8 days after surgery to ensure each post-op treatment with the doctor has been met.

LED light treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy will begin from immediately after surgery and will be done during each post-op visit to ensure a quick, smooth recovery. Each patient will also be given two 30-minute complimentary nutritional supplement IV drips during the first night.

Unlike other small clinics, GNG Hospital is a hospital-level facility and accredited by the Korean government. We conduct medical examinations covering about 30 different areas from blood, heart, lung, chest, liver, urine, and more, to ensure the safest surgery possible. In addition, we will take a panoramic 3D CT X Ray scan to find the exact location of the nerves in your face.

Weird Smell After Rhinoplasty?

Whether it be for functional, or purely aesthetic reasons, abnormal smell weeks after rhinoplasty is a common remark we often hear from patients.

Accumulation of mucus in the nose due to the reduced mobility of the mucus blanket within the nose as well as build up of crusting can cause unusual odors from within the nose. Old blood, crusts, extraneous mucus and such that build up and eventually dry up in a concentrated area

In these instances, clearing the crust will make the problem go away.  Saline nasal spray will slowly wash away the crust without the trauma of nose blowing.  Saline nasal spray instructions post-op will have been explained to you prior to your departure from Korea if the doctor found it necessary for your case. It is also very common for hard, solidified build up to either fall from out your nose, or down your throat. These chunks can be alarming, but are generally harmless.

Strange smell is not uncommon, so you don't need to worry to much if this becomes  apparant after surgery. Let your physician know. If you are not having increasing pain, redness, swelling, fevers or drainage, its unlikely to be infection. Remember, always avoid picking or sticking anything up your nose to clean or scratch at this time! And never do anything without consulting with your physician first!

Happy Recovery!
