Korea is marking one of its most solemn anniversaries on Monday: Korea's worst martime disaster. Four years ago today on April 16th 2014, the Sewol-ho capsized in waters off South Korea's south western coast, killing more than 300 people, most of them who were teenagers on a high school fieldtrip to Jeju Island, a tourist destination.
In memory of the victims, memorial ceremonies were hold nation wide Sunday to commemorate the fourth anniversay. At the nation's southwestern port city of Mokpo, the illfated ferry lies above water and was open to the public for the first time.
Marking the fourth year since the Sewol-ho disaster, the memorial ceremony serves to share the pain the with families of the victims, hoping to be a stepping stone for a safer society. A special ceremony will be held on Monday at the official memorial alter at Ansan, Gyeonggido provines. 5000 people including the families and prime minister are expected to attent
South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in a post on Facebook Sunday, asked the nation to remember the disaster and share their sorrow.
He promised to make the nation safer and that the government will continue its investigation into the search for the bodies of the missing.
